Firstly, What is a Roadworthy Certificate (RWC)?

A Roadworthy certificate, is just a certificate which is provided by a LVT (licensed vehicle tester) to say that the vehicle is fit for use on the road. There will a mechanical safety check of the car, with the areas to assessed listed below.

If you want to sell your car, you will need get a Road Worthy Certificate which is then provided to the buyer, unless the buyer is a spouse or a motor vehicle tester.

Note: A vehicle can be sold without an RWC if it is not registered however if the vehicle owner intends to drive it, a RWC will still be needed to re-register the vehicle. Source.

What is Inspected in a RWC?

The Inspection is a check of the vehicle to ensure that the key components are in fit condition for safe road use. It includes:

1) Wheels & Tyres
2) Steering, Suspension and Braking Systems
3) Seats and Seatbelts
4) Lights and Reflectors
5) Windscreen, and Windows including front wipers and washers
6) Vehicle Structure
7) Other Safety Related Items on the Body, Chassis or Engine

Note: The roadworthiness test is not a check of the mechanical reliability or general condition of the vehicle. If you require a full comprehensive test of the vehicle another inspection needs to be arranged. Source.

What happens if my car fails the roadworthy test?

This is common, cars aren’t always perfect, especially older models but not to worry. In this case if your cars fails the test, a rejection report will be provided. You will be given 14 days to repair or replace the faults and then the vehicle will be inspected again. (We offer a free re-inspection within 14 days.)

Note: If after 14 days, it has not been fixed. Another full inspection would then be required. 

What is the Cost of a Roadworthy Certificate in Melbourne?

The prices we list below are estimates (may vary) due to the age, type, condition of the vehicle. 

e.g. Older vehicles (Pre 2000) or Modified vehicles may cost more due to the extra time required to check the vehicle.

But generally, we charge $200+ for sedans and hatches, $220+ for Small SUVs/Wagons, and $250+ for Large SUVs/Vans.

We also offer FREE Re-inspections within 14 days. This means after you have the car fixed to meet the Roadworthy requirements, we will reinspect your vehicle to issue your Roadworthy Certificate.
